'Take Aways'
"Did You Know?" (submission December 31)
What it is
1) This is a fact about your organization or product or field.
2) This should be something surprising, short, and important.
Where it is
We display them online and at the festival. See booth layout (pdf file)
Uses
1) The "Did You Know's?" at the booths and others that are posted throughout the festival are both decorative and educational.
2) The "Did You Know's?" become part of an activity for all ages. Visitors write down 10 of the "Did You Know?'s" on a sheet from the festival information booth. When the visitor completes the sheet they turn this in at the information booth and get a grab bag prize. This is fun for the visitor and promotes circulation throughout the Tech Zone exhibits.

Interactive Demonstrations
What it is
1) An engaging demonstration that is hands-on and ongoing that many high school students and other visitors can try out.
2) The relationship between this demonstration and your corporation or organization or product or field should be clearly labeled and signage provided.
Where it is
These demonstrations will be at Tech Zone exhibit booths throughout scheduled exhibit hours.
Uses
1) The demonstration advertises your exhibit.
2) The demonstration engages the visitor and is the entry to further information at your exhibit.
3) The demonstration educates the visitor.

Sunoco: Plastic Technology in action! Sunoco Chemicals presents hands-on testing of plastics that are used in household, packaging, automotive, and many other products. Come BREAK STUFF! Test your strength against our tough plastic technologies that we develop right here in Pittsburgh. Learn how dispersed particles of ethylene-propylene rubber make polypropylene resist shattering upon impact while allowing it to retain its stiffness. Learn how plastiziers make the same PVC (polyvinychloride) that is used for rigid pipe flexible enough to wear as a rain coat. Learn about the chemical building blocks and processing tools that are used to make plastics. See the advances technology behind the performance of the plastics that you use everyday.
Slippery Rock University: Wednesday and Thursday students can use a cryomicroscope in a demonstration about freeze tolerance in animals. A cryostage and physiological data system will be available for student operation. Friday students can test water quality and effectiveness of mediation systems and learn about acid mine drainage. A remediation treatment system also will be set up for students' use.
Knowledgeable Personnel

Presenters' DOs and DON'Ts
Diversity
What it is
1) Diversity is a broad range of individualsincluding but not limited to variety in race, gender and educationpresenting.
2) Diversity is referenced in displays and signage.
Where it is
Throughout scheduled exhibit hours at Tech Zone Exhibits.
Uses
1) Presents your corporation or organization in the best way possible.
2) Engages and educates each unique festival visitor. Visitors who 'see themselves' feel welcome and included in your presentation.
3) Makes your Tech Zone Exhibit a success.
Some samples
1) Language that includes all persons and is not gender specific. For example, not 'mankind.'
2) Language that includes reference to both males and females engaged in their careers.
3) Photographs of your facility representing diverse participants.
Made in Pittsburgh Product (submission December 31)
What it is
A Made in Pittsburgh Product is a simple graphic (picture or symbol) that represents your organization product or field. Please email your graphic as a separate file to bakerg@csc.clpgh.org. Preferred formats are EPS, JPEG, or GIF.
Where it is
We will display a 9" X 12" laminated copy of your picture or symbol at your exhibit booth.
Uses
Families pick up the bingo sheets at the information booth and from volunteers (in bright yellow SciTech festival T-shirts). Children play by matching the picture on their bingo sheet with the one displayed at your exhibit and then get the picture stamped. When children complete a row they go to the information booth for a grab bag prize!
1) Fun and educational for children.
2) Promotes circulation throughout the Tech Zone exhibits.

Three Multiple Choice Q & A (submission December 31)
What it is
These are three brief multiple choice questions that can easily be answered by visiting your interactive exhibit. Please include the answers.
Where it is
We display your questions at your booth.
Uses
1) The questions are part of the Ready-made Student Assessment: Passport System. SciTech Festival volunteers encourage students visiting your booth to answer the questions (on small forms). The volunteers then check the students' answer sheets and stamp students' passports once correctly completed. Students who complete 5 exhibits and 1 program turn in the back tearsheet of their passport to their teachers before leaving the Science Center. Teachers know what students have accomplished.
2) Teachers can submit these tearsheets to the SciTech Festival for ACT48 eligibility for free continuing education credit (3 hours).

Highlight Math Concepts (math problem submission February)
What it is
1) The mathematics involved in your corporation or organization is an integral part of your displays and discussion.
2) A 'real-world' math problem is a problem that your organization or corporation works with regularly.
Where it is
1) The mathematics involved Throughout scheduled exhibit hours at Tech Zone Exhibits.
2) 'Real-world' math problem Online and mailed to registered teachers.
Uses
1) Advertises your Tech Zone Exhibit prior to the festival.
2) Educates students to the necessity of math in careers.
3) Assists teachers encouraging continuation of study in mathematics.
This is new for the 2004 Festival. The February workshop will be an opportunity to share your problem and question a teacher as to the format and age appropriateness of your math problem. If you cannot attend please email your math problem prior to the workshop.
Logo (submission December 31)
What it is
Please email your logo as a separate file to bakerg@csc.clpgh.org. Preferred formats are EPS, JPEG, GIF or PDF.
Where it is
These will be used for stampers at your Tech Zone Exhibit.
Uses
1) The stampers will be used for the high school career days Ready-made Student Assessment: Passport System.
2) The stampers will be used for family bingo.
Electrical and A/V Needs (submission March 15)
What it is
What you need to plug in. Please list the type and number of devices you will need electricity for. If you have A/V needs they will be met as possible on a first come first served basis (earlier submission is helpful).
Where it is
We will have this available for you at your Tech Zone exhibit.
Uses
Consider TV/VCR (loop tapes), computers, lights, etc.

Career Handouts
What it is
Career Handouts describe your corporation's or organization's variety of careers or a sampling of these careers. If at all possible these handouts should be grouped by educational level (high school, tech school, 2 year college, college grad, masters, PhD).
Where it is
These Career Handouts should be made available at your Tech Zone Exhibit. Either one copy posted for browsing or multiple copies for interested students.
Uses
1) Learning more about your corporation or organization.
2) Enables students to visualize a career pathway/goal.
Product Handouts
What it is
Product Handouts describe your corporation's or organization's variety of products or a sampling of these products.
Where it is
These Product Handouts should be made available at your Tech Zone Exhibit. Either one copy posted for browsing or multiple copies for interested visitors.
Uses
1) Learning more about your corporation or organization.
2) Enables students to visualize a career pathway/goal.
High School Job Shadowing Opportunities & College Internships - OPTIONAL
What it is
1) Information about your job shadowing program or internships.
2) You will share the names of interested students with your employees and help the students connect with someone to job-shadow for a morning or afternoon.
Where it is
We post at your exhibit a sign that indicates your corporation or organization will work with students on job shadowing.
Uses
1) Student signs up right now for a job shadowing opportunity.
2) Students know that as college students your organization is a place to approach for an internship.
Some samples
1) Sharing a pamphlet from your corporation or organization describing your job shadowing and/or internship opportunities.
2) Taking down names of interested students and emailing these to you personnel.
3) Taking a teacher's contact information and working out something that works for all involved.
'Take Aways' - OPTIONAL
What it is
Small gifts that visitors can 'take away' that are connected in some way to your corporation or organization. These can be handed out to all visitors or earned by completing a small test or task or the Q & A (see above).
Where it is
You will distribute these from your Tech Zone Exhibit.
Uses
1) Attracts visitors to your exhibit.
2) Advertises your exhibit at the festival and after.
Some samples
US Steel gives away a steel slinky upon successful completion of their steel quiz.
Several exhibitors give away pens, pencils or markers.
